This is Hydro Ottawa's fifth year of support to Ottawa's Winter Warmth Program.
Winter Warmth is an energy assistance program which provides one-time financial assistance to low-income families and individuals living at or below the poverty line who are finding it difficult to meet all of their financial commitments, including their energy bills.
As the local electricity distributor we recognize that the service we provide is essential to the quality of life of every resident in our community. Winter Warmth offers low-income customers an opportunity to have their utility costs paid, helping to keep their families safe and warm during the cold winter months.
Last winter a total of 255 households in Ottawa received Winter Warmth assistance, benefiting 850 people, more than half of whom were children. Hydro Ottawa's contribution directly benefited 184 of these households.
How does the program work?
Families and individuals needing financial assistance to pay their Hydro Ottawa bill can apply through a network of community-based agencies, or by calling the Salvation Army Booth Centre.
To ensure the funds support individuals in need, applications are assessed based on several criteria, including household income, the status of the applicant's account with their utility, and their ability to sustain their energy costs after they receive a grant. Upon a successful application, one-time funding is credited to the applicant’s Hydro Ottawa account.
