Hydro Ottawa employees giving kids a sporting chance

March 18, 2016

Today, Hydro Ottawa and Christie Lake Kids are proud to host the 7th annual Hydro Ottawa STAR Cup. Hydro Ottawa employees will volunteer their time to play hockey with the Christie Lake kids and show their support through participation and positive role modelling.

The Hydro Ottawa STAR Cup is an event offered through the Christie Lake STAR Program, which operates throughout the school year in social housing communities, providing high-risk inner city kids with year-round recreation and skills development to help build self-esteem, social skills and positive perspectives. The Christie Lake STAR Program provides children and youth with free equipment, coaching, mentorship, transportation, food, and facilities, all of which they would not otherwise have access to.

Hydro Ottawa CEO Bryce Conrad and employee volunteers, along with Segun Makinde, Canadian Track & Field Olympian (Christie Lake Kids Ambassador), will be on-hand for the official puck-drop and cheque presentation, which takes place at Brewer Arena from 1-3 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Since 2013, Hydro Ottawa has partnered with Christie Lake Kids to fund the establishment of the “Hydro Ottawa Sustainable Youth Leadership Centre” and has since then expanded its partnership to fund the “Skills Through Activity and Recreation (STAR)” Hockey and Skating Program.
  • Hydro Ottawa recognizes the important role volunteers play in creating a strong, supportive community and believes that every child deserves the chance to lead a full and productive life.
  • Christie Lake Kids provides year-round programming within Ottawa’s social housing environments for at risk youth and children between the ages of 6 and 17.

Quotes

“Hydro Ottawa and Christie Lake Kids believe in the same thing: children and youth matter. Our partnership is built on volunteerism and positively impacting the lives of kids with events like the STAR Cup, acting as mentors, and readying the camp for the season. I couldn’t be prouder of my employees for giving their time to help make this day extra special for our young hockey stars.”
