Public Statement – Update on Sinkhole in Downtown Ottawa

June 8, 2016

At approximately 10:45 this morning, Hydro Ottawa experienced a power outage affecting 850 customers in the Rideau, Nicholas, Wellington and Sussex area due to a sinkhole at the corner of Sussex and Rideau. Power loss was a result of underground electricity infrastructure at this location being impacted by the sinkhole.

Currently (as of 5 p.m.), there are seven buildings without power in the area. Hydro Ottawa crews have been on site and continue to investigate the work required to be completed to re-energize the equipment, however personnel are awaiting safety inspections to proceed. Once permitted, our crews will work to safely restore power to the affected customers.

We are continuing to monitor this situation and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. We urge people to take extra precaution near the area. For all emergencies, customers should contact 911 or the appropriate authority.

Customers may report power outages or electrical emergencies 24-hours-a-day by calling 613-738-0188. Hydro Ottawa’s online power outage map displays the most current information about ongoing outages. This map is available at hydroottawa.com/outages.

Hydro Ottawa wishes to thank its customers for their patience and understanding as restoration efforts are underway.
