Green Button
Access and share your electricity data
Green Button is a province-wide standard that allows you to access and share your energy usage and billing data in a machine-readable XML format. This makes it easier for you to track your usage patterns, monitor consumption and make more informed energy decisions.
Green Button supports two services:
Download my data
You can download up to 24 months of electricity usage and billing data through the Green Button portal or through MyAccount. Green Button data includes:
- Electricity consumption data from your smart meter
- Billing data (e.g., payments, generation and distribution charges, demand charges, third-party charges)
To access the Green Button portal, log in using your MyAccount credentials or enter the following information from your latest bill:
- Your 20-digit account number
- Total kWh consumption
- Bill due date
Connect my data
You can securely give mobile apps or service providers access to your energy data. This allows them to provide tools and recommendations to help you save energy and manage costs.
Key features:
- You control who can access your data, how long they can access it and the type of data they can see.
- You can revoke or change access at any time through your account settings.
- Personally identifiable information is transmitted separately from your energy usage data to protect your privacy.
If you want to authorize third-party access to your Green Button data, that process needs to begin in the third-party software or app. The third-party provider will link you to Hydro Ottawa's Green Button authentication process so you can log in and select the information you want to share with them.
Are you a third-party developer or service provider?
Third-party providers who want to integrate with Hydro Ottawa's Green Button services must:
- Complete the onboarding process
- Test and certify their solution with the Green Button Alliance (GBA)
GBA certification ensures consistent, secure and standards-compliant implementation of Green Button Collect My Data services.
Important considerations
Green Button data uses the same intervals as captured by your smart meter (e.g., 15-minute, hourly, daily).
While we aim to provide accurate data, gaps or estimates may occur due to outages, meter issues or communication problems.
Green Button data is best used as a tool to monitor trends and make informed decisions, not for precise billing reconciliation.
