DER connection process

DER connection process & application forms

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are pieces of technology that allow you to generate your own power. They help you save money on your bill. What’s more, with a DER, you can send your excess electricity to the grid for an on-bill credit.

Connection charges and payment process

Generators are responsible for certain administrative and service charges, which cover the costs of setting up and maintaining an account and connecting renewable generation projects to Hydro Ottawa's electricity distribution system.

Interim generator charges

Type of DERAccount set-up chargeMonthly service chargeAdministration charge*
Micro-generation (12kW AC or less)$29$16 (per generator service point)N/A
Generation more than 12 kW AC$29$84 (per generator service point)$162
Hydro Electric Contract Initiative (HCI), Ontario Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) and Other Energy Resource$29$347 (per generator service point)$162

* This one-time flat charge applies to all new energy resource facilities when contracts are assigned that require legal services and service entrance assessments by Hydro Ottawa.

You’ll receive an administration charge if we have to assess your service entrance and seek legal services.

Interim non-exporting standby charge

You’ll have to pay a standby charge if your non-exporting generator meets or exceeds 500 kW. This charge may be fixed or variable.

To determine the variable charge, we take the contracted standby demand (kW) and the difference between the peak demand when you’re running your generator and the peak demand when you’re not. We then multiply this by the applicable standby variable charge listed below.

If there’s no contracted standby demand, we multiply the difference in peak demands by the applicable standby variable charge.

Charge TypeCustomer CategoryRate
Interim monthly service chargeAll$186.80
Interim variable chargeGeneral service customer (50-1,499 kW)$2.4940/kW *
Interim variable chargeGeneral service customer (1,500-4,999 kW)$2.2877/kW *
Interim variable chargeGeneral service large user customer$2.5388/kW *

Restricted feeders

A restricted feeder has no additional short circuit capacity. It can’t sustain a DER connection. The following feeders are restricted:

Ellwood MTS:

  • ELW feeders
  • AN feeders
  • AF02 through AF04
  • AQ02 through AQ04
  • UA05 through UA07
  • UZ05 through UZ12

We’ll determine the capacity of feeders backed up by Ellwood MTS, like those prefaced by AE and AJ, during the DER connection impact assessment.

If a feeder is thermally constrained, we’ll work to find a solution.
